HUSZTI dental care
At Huszti Dental Care, we think of all our patients as family. Whether you come from Milford or Highland or from farther away than that, you are also part of the Huszti Dental Care family.
And this is the time of year for family, and for traditions and for food. In that spirit, we wanted to share some holiday traditions of our dental care staff. Maybe they will inspire you!
Heather is the smiling face at our front desk. As our administrator, she knows how to get things done. Even at home she knows how to keep people satisfied. During the holidays, she can always be counted on to make her famour Peanut Butter Pie. It’s a real crowd pleaser, and with peanut butter, oreos and cream cheese, it’s no wonder! Plus, it’s quick and easy to make. Maybe this will become part of your holiday table.
Dr. Huszti’s assistant Kim has a fun Christmas morning tradition with her children. They all wear matching pajamas! Sometimes it might be a little difficult to find the three different sizes — for Kim, her grown son and growing daughter — but the photos and the memories are always worth the effort.
Raquel, one of our two talented hygienists, brings her family’s Brazilian heritage front and center every year by making truffles or, as they are called in Brazil, brigadieros. This tasty treat has an interesting, if elusive, history.
Most people say these treats made essentially of sweetened condensed milk and cocoa powder, date back to just after World War II when fresh milk and sugar were scarce. Brigadieros are served year-round, but are especially associated with Christmas.
They are also associated with the presidential candidacy of Eduardo Gomes. He was a brigadier (brigadiero in Portuguese) in the Brazilian army and his wife made these candies to sell to raise money for the campaign. By the end of the campaign, people were calling these “The Brigadier’s sweets” and after that were shortened to brigadieros. Other people say Gomes was single and popular with women voters and these sweets were to remind them that he was single and sweet to look at. Either way, they are divine!
Brigadieros
Go shopping:
• 1 (14oz) can sweet condensed milk
• 4 Tbsp cocoa powder, sifted
• 2 Tbsp butter, plus more for rolling balls
• A pinch of salt
• High quality chocolate sprinkles
Begin:
In a petit sauce pan mix the sweet condensed milk, the cocoa powder, the salt and the butter.
Move the sauce pan to the stove and heat it over medium-low heat.
Cooking it, mixing continuously (this is important, otherwise it will burn!) until it thickens. A way to know is to run your wooden spoon (or spatula) in the middle of the mixture. If it takes a while for the mixture to move, then your brigadeiro is ready!
Reserve, letting it cool to room temperature.
In a plate or bowl, spread your sprinkles.
Once the brigadeiro is cool, grease your hands with butter and roll the brigadeiros into little balls.(In Brazil we usually use half a tablespoon as measurement, but you can make your balls as big or small as you'd like!)
Roll the brigadeiro balls into the sprinkles and place them in paper/foil candy cups.
We hope whatever you do this holiday season that you have a safe and happy one filled with love and memories, and know you are part of the growing Huszti Dental Care family!
