There may be no better poster child for taking care of your teeth than the Bumble in the holiday classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Remember the end when Herbie the elf, who feels like a misfit because he would rather be a dentist than make toys, saves the day by fixing the Bumble’s teeth? That little act turns the scary abominable snowman into a loving, caring friend to all.
We can all get grumpy when we are not feeling well, and who wants to go through the holiday season being like that? No one! So here are a few holiday-specific tips to keep your teeth healthy during this time of year.
- The holidays are a super busy time, what with get-togethers and baking to do and gifts to buy and wrap, it’s hard to find time to do it all. Don’t skimp on your mouth care routine, though, no matter how tempting it may be to just drop into your bed after a tiring day. Keep brushing at least twice a day and floss regularly. Take that time for you, you need it and you deserve it.
- If you don’t have one already, you might want to create a little kit — nothing fancy, just a brush, some toothpaste and floss in a little bag — for you to brush your teeth when you are away from home. That co-worker’s homemade sweets are irresistable, so go ahead and enjoy them knowing you don’t have to wait until you get home to brush your teeth.
- Be smart about what you are eating: That caramel corn might be calling your name, but go easy on it and chew carefully, so you don’t crack a tooth. Also, chewy candy can sometimes pull out fillings, so go easy.
- This should go without saying, but…your teeth are not meant to open gifts, so don’t bite through ribbons or use them to make a starting hole in packaging. And don’t use them to crack nuts or pull a cork out of a wine bottle, either. You do not want to spend holiday time in a dental chair.
