HUSZTI dental care
“FATHER BUGGY”
Retired restaurateur Don Payne
The true pleasure of being a dentist comes from our interactions with patients. And one of the real joys is when you find an old friend sitting in the chair, waiting for treatment.
In the early 1980s, Dr. Huszti worked as a dishwasher and line cook in a small, family-owned restaurant in Farmington Hills called The Buggy Works. The name was later changed to The Family Buggy, and it was a real family restaurant. Favorites like fried chicken and spaghetti for the kids and more adult fare like steaks and crepes for the adults. Their salads – the Marty, in particular – were wildly popular, and even today you can find hack versions of the dressing on various websites. (Dr. Huszti still remembers the recipe, but won’t likely tell you.) That food was cooked and served by high school and college students who, with their older coworkers, became a family in and of itself.
Don Payne owned that restaurant and a few others and could often be seen on a busy night rallying the crew. His wife and children helped out. It was a formative experience for Dr. Huszti remembers, and he still keeps in regular touch with many of the people he met then.
A few months back, Don came across a photo of some of the high school workers and recognized a 16-year-old Bill Huszti (he wasn’t a doctor then, obviously) dressed as a cheerleader for Halloween and thought he would like to have it. It took a few tries – old addresses were more easily found – before Don found Huszti Dental Care and sent it. It finally got to Dr. Huszti’s hands, but not before the staff, which opened the letter, had a good laugh. As a side note, Huszti Dental Care’s new front desk administrator Heather remembered The Buggy fondly and was surprised to learn Dr. Huszti worked there.
It wasn’t long after that, when Dr. Huszti found Don Payne sitting in the chair, seeking a second opinion from Huszti Dental Care. It was a blast from the past and the two spent a good deal of time catching up. Don even brought in some old employee lists from the early 80s and they shared stories about the people on them.
In 2011, Don closed the restaurant Dr. Huszti worked at and has been happily retired, hanging out with his wife, children and grandchildren.
We hope to see more friends – old ones and those we haven’t met yet – as fully vaccinated people tentatively try to go back to their old lives. Remember, our safety protocols are important as much for as as they are for you, and we take them very seriously.
As you start to resume your lives, remember that dental care is important and we don’t care how long it’s been since you’ve seen a dentist. It’s time to come back.
